An odd mix of people singing an MJ song I suppose in roundabout effort to please everyone. Carrie Underwood for the...wait what? Carrie Underwood? Yes, Carrie Underwood for the country folks who'd all agree that Michael waws a jollay gerd fella. Usher for the old teens and young adults who grew through MJ's black to white phase. Smokey Robinson for the older gen who could only remember the black MJ. Celine Dion for the gays I'm guessing?...And J. Hudson for everyone else. Yup. All covered...

..except the 3D glasses. Maybe there's an iPhone App for this we all forgot to download. But all iSee are fuzzy lines. (Ok that joke goes to failblog)
SO many fuzzy lines that Rihanna had a headache, she went to the loo. What you see at 5:47 is actually a body double mannequin sitting in her place. Go ahead, pinch her!
You were probably going to, until you heard on 5:59th minute of the video, how Carrie Underwood sang, "What about Kanye West!"? (I'm not kidding, scroll to it and listen)

Carrie, I think he's all bound up in Taylor Swift's limo boot! Ironically inspired by Kanye's "flashing lights" video.

Okay, all jokes aside. "Earth Song" is one of my fave MJ songs. And I think Nobody should try ~~winging~~ singing it on a big stage like the Grammys. Blanket is the smartest out of the 3 kids to not make an appearance and Orianthi shoulda been there with a guitar solo.

March ado about Sigur Rós & The Knife..

My condolences to Sigur Rós fans who were looking forward to their new album in 2010. It was apparently just a rumor. Fact is that the members are making babies (not among themselves, of course) and that...they ran out of juice, the creative kind. HAH! Here, read this article, if you don't believe me.

Frontman, Jónsi Birgisson, will be out with a solo album in March though, titled "Go". Listen to the single 'Boy Lilikoi' at his website here. I like it. I forgive them.

Speaking of March releases...

Swedes electro pop duo The Knife is having a go at some kind of 'electro opera'.

Listen to the free streaming of 'Tomorrow, in a year' to hear what I mean. The studio version of the opera will be released 1st March.

It's like eating hotdog dipped in peanut butter, it's an acquired taste. I haven't asked my taste buds yet if they like it, I'll be sure to do so when they're ..actually ..y'know..paying attention.

In the music world, The Killers, in their pursuit of happiness, have broken the hearts of their Asian fans by canceling their Asian tour.

Some big names like Madonna, Jay-Z, Justin T, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Xtina, etc have come forward in stripped-down performances to gather donations, in their pursuit of happiness for the Haiti earthquake survivors.

Brad Pitt & Angeline Jolie are in the midst of separating their fortunes fairly, in their individual pursuits of happiness.

Tiger Woods had a dozen mistresses in his pursuit of happiness.

In Malaysia, people are vandalizing places of worship in their pursuit of showing unhappiness.

So what have YOU been doing in YOUR pursuit of happiness? Or is happiness a lucky charm you keep in your heart that no longer needs pursuing?

In whatever packages happiness comes to you, I hope that when you continue dreaming, you don't stop doing.

Can I tell you a funny story, while in the car when we first heard this song we guessed it was a local band. HAH! (okay it was funnier at the time when the DJ said "that was Green Day!")

If you watched Transformers 2, you would've gotten sick of this song the way you would've gotten sick of all the robots like cheesecake - only good in the right portion. But in the movie, they were blown way out of proportion. (I'm not sure if there was a pun there but yea if you sense it, then yea it was intended. word. whatever.)

This Sarawak girl was discovered on Youtube, signed on to Jack Johnson's label, Brushfire Records, now she's currently touring the US til August.

Had the pleasure of meeting her at an Xpax roadshow in KL I was covering last year, sweet girl, you could tell her influences have been worldly (read: educated outside her place of birth..like way outside). I hope she goes far.

Then maybe finally, at the other side of the world, people will not mistake Malays for Mexicans no more..

Oh by the way, her name is Zee Avi...or Izyan Alirahman...or KokoKaina..it's so tough to be relevant with one name these days..

Some say he's passe but he's only 27, some love his ol' skinny self but hello, the new buff bod is not too shabby to look at! But everyone's gotta agree that once upon time, the ditty "Seven Days" got you hooked (and those current rippin' muscles made you look!)

Even with the cheesy casanova onstage moves, I forgive him when I hear those vocal licks that can feel like a tongue down my spine. Enjoyed myself but not so much the venue and sound system. Zirca is the worst place to have a live gig with a band, sound system was most times just a blur buzz in my ears on top of the songs I was hearing. LiveNation gets demerit points for this.

Otherwise it was a nice good trip down craig david lane - "fill me in". check. "seven days". check. "rise and fall". check. "don't love you no more". check. "rewind". check. Topped off with current hit "Insomnia". cheeky checky check.

N.E.R.D Live @ Mosaic Music Festival, Esplanade

It. was. a. blast. Pharell is a ladykiller and a crowd pleaser, it's too bad we missed Chad but I almost forgot about a certain Mr Hugo who is part of the N.E.R.D outfit during the one and a half hour spasms of beats and bounces and people being pulled up the stage. It's like the artiste-audience barrier got broken down and we were just all in one big jamming session with the boys. I've never seen so many girls unleashing their hoochie mama-ness on the esplanade stage during "She Wants To Move". Crowd went ape shit when "Everyone Nose" came up, and of course went into a tizzy with "Spaz", we also tried to become the namesake of the song "Popcorn" by bouncing up and down left and right - Pharell would want no less, as he kept urging the audience to continue going crazy, even spewing an across the border competitiveness, mentioning they want to tell Malaysia (as they head to sunburst the next day) that they ain't got the energy like Singapore did. Woot and what Woop of energy That brought out of the crowd. Plus, nice throwback to Franz Ferdinand as the band segue-ed into "Take Me Out" during one of the songs, it's okay if Pharell was "pitchy" at parts, his charm and aggressive stage antics more than made up for it, so says the girls....

I'm beginning to fall in love with watching shows at the Esplanade - awesome sound system, cozy intimate setting even amidst a loud-banging show, I LOVE IT.

If Justin Tim brought sexy back, Jason Raz brought hippie back.

That boy's carefree and uninhibited nature on a big stage (which he claims its his first foray into playing at such big venues) was super infectious. "Do you feel like your life has been elevated?" he asks...oh yes. 'Specially when we get to belt out "I....ayyy ayyy...won't worry my life awayyy.." ad nauseum as he spins into an extended live version of The Remedy...oooh he's got the poison AND he's got the remedy.

Looked like he felt at home on stage, at one point taking his pet hobby of polaroids on the road with him as he snapped pictures of each band members and flung each polaroid film into the crowd. Nice souvenir for the one who caught the polaroid of Mr Mraz himself!

Even though at points, I wished I was in a cozier intimate acoustic setting with certain slow burners like "Mr Curiosity", the show was simply satisfying to watch a performer whose enjoyment of his own music reeks through the pores of each high note he reached, each "thank you's" in different languages after each song, each cheeky lil dance moves that seduces the crowd, each tune, each smile, each wonderment he managed to fill up the stadium.

Many more stadiums to fill and I hope he comes back!

I bear some kinda grudge against Pharell for introducing the wear-your-cap-real-high concept, because kids who follow the trend on the streets might as well put a pencil in my eye. But otherwise, he is one sssssick producer and I'm pretty sure their live show will be dope. So I will see you there!

My first thought - Maxim and Keith are two VERY FIT boys (or old men rather).

Keith jumped/spun/pranced like a techno-loving boxer ready to knock you out with some heavy-punching beats.

From the get-go, (they started off with something off the new album, Invaders Must Die - "World's on Fire") right to the end (ended with an encore performance of "Out Of Space"), it seemed like a sin not to go ape shit! The order of the day was disorder - strobe lights, energy-inducing thumps and aimless limbs. I choked on my saliva while hopping like a crazy rabbit while Keith kept telling me to "BREATH WITH ME". I think I managed to exorcise some long overdue demons while reaping the benefits of an hour long aerobics workout while at it.

A glance at other gig-revellers and I keep seeing gleeful faces who were so glad they made the decision to pay some big money for a mere 70-minute or so gig.

Gotta say it was the most satisfying gig I've been to for awhile, great sweaty workout, my calves are still aching yo! Videos below...

There was the loop machine, a song called 'Fruit Machine', and all the machine thingamajigs that supported the 2-piece band to make them sound like 5-piece DJ set. Money don't make the world go round, machines do.

Such evolution means you don't need 6 people to sound like a full orchestra, just pre-recorded stuff that comes on cue, and do it often enough, you become singer/songwriter/button-pusher.

Okay digs aside.

I had a marvelousssssss time at The Ting Tings. Sure they get flak for their melodic hooks, I just think those savvy machines have got subliminal functions that wires some of us to get so extra hooked while the infra-redness diluted across others who'd end up thinking the songs are merely irritating.

The band teased, they threw treats and they delivered to their very-young (or is it just me?) audience.

Slightly extended versions of their biggest hits, "That's Not My Name" and "Shut Up And Let Me Go" were delicioussss, we lapped it all up like hungry dawgs, wishing there were second servings.

Their other songs were tasty dancey treats as well - "We Started Nothing", "Great DJ" and "We Walk"...it's just too bad they've only got one album!

I don't deserve to really review this because Mystery Jets are abit of a mystery to me. I haven't heard of their music and I haven't heard of them before, but a pair of tickets landed on my hand so I did a Youtube skimming of their songs and found myself humming addicted to one or two - "Young Love" (if I only knew your name / I'd go from door to door) was one of em. And hopped to Zouk to check 'em out.

A pretty awesome band, short of mighty awesome only coz I haven't had enough time to make memorable memories with their songs or build a rapport with their lyrics yet. haha, so it was abit cold. But I did enjoy myself and the songs all spoke for itself.

For those of you who're clueless bout this band, here's a story about the lead singer and his dad (Blaine and Henry Harrison) to warm some cold cold hearts..

First gig of the year and it started out with a bang already!

I'm posting this while it's still fresh in my head. Whatever Torquil was sipping, it's so strong I am feeling its buzz, still. Hahah.

So I didn't have the best of seats, way up on top, but the band seemed mighty sympathetic that we're paying so much for their gig, they played close to 2 hours long and kept thanking us and expressing their gratefulness at how they managed to sell 1,500 kinda-expensive tickets to this tiny red dot. They were also shocked that the crowd was made up of many locals as opposed to "only Canadian English teachers" as the band had expected. heh

So appreciative they were, Torquil during his bouts of musical spasms, after repeatedly spouting the lines "Stay Alive" on 'Calendar Girl", suddenly leapt out into the crowd, balanced his way on the seats to the middle of the crowd, like Criss Angel walking on water. He was warmly received and he screamed (I've no idea what, his thanks?) while reaching out to people whose hands are in the air eager to give him a bigger welcome. This could be the first (maybe the last) time I see a successful crowd-surfing attempt at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Wicked. I want whatever he's having.

On top of that there were dozens of white and red roses sitting on their amps on stage. The members would occasionally grab some stalks and throw it to the crowd, or bunch a handful of petals and throw it on stage the way people throw rice at a wedding - ceremoniously to give the songs abit more oomph. How romantic. Lovely. (Though not so lovely for the cleaner afterwards)

Oh I'm so caught up describing the experience I haven't even mentioned about the music. How rude of me. What else is there to say...the crescendo of "Your ex-lover is dead" would've put anyone in the Hall in a second of cosmic high. There is nothing else I can describe about the music 'cept, you shoulda been there!!

If you weren't, you also missed:

- Amy Millan rocking in her disco sequinned top.
- singing a Happy Birthday song for ~~Evan~~ Alan!
- seeing drummer Pat playing the drums with 2 stalks of red roses.
- catching a glimpse of Chris two-stepping a salsa(?)-esque dance when he thought no one's watching.

Do you know how old these guys are?! Ageless Beauties never stop rockin'!

On the beautiful night of October 29th, I had one thing in mind - well technically a 2-in-1 thing - to catch Camera Obscura & Kanye West live, at 2 different venues.

This was a real warm warm-up to the night - chill pop served with a syrup of great acoustics and a dash of Scottish charm...

They played all my favourites - Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (lordy, tracyanne forgot the lyrics! but it's okay!), Let's get out of this country, Razzle Dazzle Rose, Super Trouper, Tears For Affairs and If looks could kill. Hoorah!

Plus a treat for all us quiet fans (only coz we were soaked in the lake of chillout-ness), they played some new songs, namely "French Navy", "You told a lie" and this one I've got on my bootleg cam, which I'm pretty sure I heard Tracyanne name it "Swans" but I can't go on the record for that, the Scottish accent might've gotten lost in translation....But Enjoy anyway, plus a vid of "Tears for affairs" following that...it was like my rainy day sunday playlist came to life at the esplanade!

As most esplanade gigs go, the whole affair ended promptly at 9pm...as predicted. Which was why I was able to fit Kanye West's Glow In The Dark Tour into the night's itinerary. So off I went to Singapore Indoor Stadium...

Technically, the gig started at 9:20pm - that's when Kanye came out after the opening acts. I made it there at 9:30 (missed out 3 songs including "Through the wire". Hotdamn!)

But the rest of the gig was satisfying enough. Especially the encore - "Stronger" is one ape shit stadium song. There wasn't any glowing in the dark except those technicolor lights (did they borrow Kylie's setup??)

But if you paid moolah to watch this hyperbolic character in person on stage then you got your money's worth. He f*cked up, apologised and continued, he freestyled(?) about some fishes in the sea and pinocchio and turned his performances into the exorcising of his inner demons from the tragedy of his mother's death and the heartbreak from his breakup. And we had front row seats to watch all that entertaining attention-seeking drama to the tunes of rap (and some auto-tuned singing)! So no complaints, I enjoyed myself. Here, have some of it...

Look, ma! Kanye f*cked up!

Okay I didn't manage to get it on camera, but on the start of the performance for the still-hot-off-the-oven single, "heartless", Kanye effed up, admitted it and told the DJ to spin it again so he could restart. Earlier, the vocoded/autotuned voice of his was heard prematurely...Mr DJ, wake up!

Anyhoo, last night was a hullaballoo of a hoot, I caught Camera Obscura AND Kanye West on the same night. At 2 different venues. Suddenly I am mega grateful over the size of our little tiny island. Good golly miss molly, I DO HAVE special abilities after all.

What's new that popped up most recently?

1) Kanye "World Premieres" his new single (from upcoming new album) at the VMAs - "Love Lockdown".

When thinking out of the box means doing what is outside of your capabilities...then let's just stay in. Nice song but not so nice singing (not even the auto-tuner could save him)

2) Travis' "J Smith" (from upcoming album entitled "Ode to J Smith) overlayed on the true life video of a man trapped in an elevator for 41 hours.

Is it not sick to actually tap my foot and enjoy this song while watching someone's torment in fast forward? In any way, this song is sick! ...And I mean that in the Hip Hop positive way.

In an age of attention-deficit disorderliness, I shall keep this short. Just as the band had kept the gig pretty short (and yes, I'm still bearing a small grudge over it)

I don't know how many times I've mouthed "If only DCFC would play in singapore.." and then brush it impossible at the next breath. Who would've thunk that it all accumulated into a silent prophecy that came true.

The gig was surreal (to me at least). The band was possessed (by the music). The fans were left unsatisfied. (what's the hurry, DCFC?)

I got swept under the death cab rug as they enclosed me with their brilliant darkness, the world was shut out and at the "photobooth" chorus I was asphyxiated by their surreal physical presence barely inches in front of me, throwing their beautiful music to my face. Music that've played in countless loops in the mixtape of my life in drive-by.

My heart is an empty cave full of echoes - repeating the lines "I need you so much closer"....as "transatlanticism" sealed the night.

(How's that for a line of groupie devotion, ben and gang?)

A roadie gave me the setlist and ben's guitar pick - precious physical reminder of a metaphysical experience...

big day out - splender in the grass - all tomorrow's parties - loollapalooza - now thossse, even though I may not know shit about the festivals or who's playing, sounds like something I'd wanna tell people that I've gone to!

now which is "madness!!" and which is "meh"?

I'm gonna come up with a list of alternative names for this festival...watch this space..

I enjoyed this one. Been a fan since her first single "Other Side of the World" and it's pretty awesome that she made a stop here in the singapura. A little over the top on the audience praises but down to earth in her kookiness. KT owned it. Made the audience do some poppin and lockin, cracked some pretty lame funny jokes and was generally very warm.

With the band and some back-up singers, she did most, if not all the songs off "Drastic Fantastic", a couple off "Eye to the Telescope" and the encore included a Bangles cover, "Walk Like an Egyptian".

I would've enjoyed it more if she did "False Alarm" and "Heal Over" but ye can't have everything...

Maybe next time.

Mosaic 2008. If you were there, not bad, you're a square but with sandpapered edges so that makes you safe and cool...not that I'm saying I'm cool or anything but hell yea I was there baby!!

Let me break it down to you.....

Broken Social Scene made me see Stars and Sons, bringing me to the 7/4 Shoreline while I watch all these people drinking Lover's Spit ignoring their parents' pep talk about The Bird and The Bee. Ironically, everyone broke into a Polite Dance Song Again & Again because I'm a Broken Heart. So I decided to get to The Roots of my emotions only to find The Seed 2.0 is planted in my left foot, so I boogied barely 10 metres in front of ?uestlove and screamed "You Got Me". It was so loud, my voice travelled to the 11th hour where Sondre sang me, "Don't be Shallow". I was so tired after that music-infested week, I went home and had to Sleep on Needles.

So. what's your Mosaic story?

Took a sorta day trip to catch Explosions in the Sky in KL. Awesome show, although I'll admit their sounds were too epic for a small club. They were intense and had...great stamina, never stopped once during their 90 minute set. No encore, no problem.

The next time I see Explosions, I want them to do a rooftop gig with spotlights beaming in the sky ala gotham calling for batman. Now That would be perfectly matched with their music.

- An acapella version of "Tom's Diner" - a finger-snapping minimalist opener that slowly builds up to each member of the band coming out and taking positions.

Caution: Don't watch these if you want to keep thinking that this Timbaland-produced song called "Apologize" performed by One Republic is actually...a really good song.

A new year has begun and it's time to do the token reflection of yesteryear.

I'd like to list my favourite music videos I've come across last year. There have been many, and I'm sure there are many more I haven't seen, what I'm trying to say is...this list is based on the as-wide-and-far-as-my-eyes-have-seen scale. Here goes...

In no order of merit:

1. Feist - 1234

What can I say, this video makes me giggle in glee...it can totally make my day. Sometimes the best things in life may look simple...but are the most difficult to execute.

2. Timbaland feat. The Hives - Throw It On Me

I love this! It's a comic book visual feast that's thrown on your face the way the song has been thrown to your ears from a slingshot with full force. Love the song too, this is what you get if we all (rock & hip hop & WWE?) can all get along.

3. Bat For Lashes - What's A Girl To Do

An example of how a music video can actually enhance your enjoyment of a song. You know sometimes movies (adapted from books) struggle to stay loyal to the book? This video stayed very loyal to the song - the creepy and haunting feel of falling out of love never felt so right.

4. Band Of Horses - Is There A Ghost

I don't know what's the significance of a pillow thief but this video had a build-up, a climax and an ending - making it very easy to enjoy this very simple yet creative piece of work.

5. Mark Ronson feat. Lily Allen - Oh My God

Did someone say "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" - Yes, cartoons can seduce too and to the music of Mark Ronson, it's just purr-fection dahling...

Operation Bring Arcade Fire To Singapore

Rumor has it, LAMC will consider bringing the band Arcade Fire down to Singapore (make the band make a pit stop on our sunny little music-hungry island on their way to Down Under) if they can generate interest here…that is, if they can get 2,000 names in a Facebook Group called “Arcade Fire In Singapore”, with everyone saying “hell yeah!”.

So what are you waiting for? I hear the echoes of “hell yeah!”s. If you’re on Facebook, join this group - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5415814980. And then keep on inviting more people you know to join it and ask them to invite more people to join and on and on and on and on like that. Currently the group has 1,067 members, halfway there, baby!

And hopefully, in the not so distant future, I get to announce an Arcade Fire concert in Singapore. HELL YEAH!

ETA: It's friday night and I checked my email and received an essay-like message from this facebook group whose admins are nudging (hard) against this movement of theirs being called "a rumour".

Let me throw a WISHBoNe (What It Should Have Been) to this post, so I can have a peaceful weekend...

I retract the sentence - "Rumour has it, LAMC will be bringing the band to Singapore if they can generate interest here", I'm replacing it with "Rumor has it that Arcade Fire could actually be coming to Singapore!"

And to clarify any misreadings, I am referring to the actual concert itself. I am not saying that the Facebook group's movement was spun out of mere rumours.

It is to my understanding that as long as there is no confirmation aka solid facts like the venue, date and time for a concert, the concert is still within "rumour" territory, no?

But one thing to get straight is that: the people who set up the group have had direct contact with LAMC (As I know now after their lengthy clarifications).

So let's break it down...

Fact: LAMC did send out a poll on their mailing list to ask concert-goers which bands would they be interested to see here and Arcade Fire was one them. But LAMC needs to see how big an interest such a band can generate first of course, before actually bringing them in. Thus, the Facebook group was formed to gather all ye Arcade Fire fans to hollaback.

Rumor: LAMC will definitely bring the band in if they see 2,000 members join the Facebook group, "Arcade Fire In Singapore".

So the fact that this is being taken seriously by such a concert organizer is not very far from the fact that The Arcade Fire could actually be brought here (although that isn't a fact yet). It also highlights the fact that there IS considerable interest and demand for such indie groups here in Singapore.

So whether we term it "A Rumour" or "A Bratwurst Sausage", one thing's for sure: This is some serious shit, yall. There are some (now, many) people who are SERIOUS about bring The Arcade Fire to Singapore.

And if you are one who would pay to watch them when the band comes, join the group, if you're not, then spread the message to others you know who are actually fans.

But all that aside, so much passion these people have...keep it up! I salute people who actually get up and DO SOMETHING and despise smackmouths who can talk a novel but don't budge a finger.

So let's Bring Arcade Fire to Singapore and make love (safely), not war.

I got my hands on Muon's EP, "Love Drops" (the prelude to their full-length album "The New Mutants" due out later this year), and I sat down and slurped a listen.

It was as if my brain waves had turned into a tangible technicolor mirage and my mind got lost into a blurred ecstacy of daydream delusions and mindless meanderings. haha...sometimes I try too hard to describe pretentiously eh..

but seriously, this was some shoegaze dope.

Lotsa good stuff from home bands coming out during year's end, watch out for Muon's LP, B-Quartet's "Tomorrow Is Our Permanent Address" coming out in November, I Am David Sparkle releasing their second EP first in Malaysia during the Global Gathering performance in Malacca, the EP's out on 7th November in Singapore. Woopee.

Pitchfork talked to Jonny Greenwood and he explains the band's decision to let listeners decide.

Gothamist: Why give people the option to pay whatever they want?

Greenwood: It's just interesting to make people pause for even a few seconds and think about what music is worth now. I thought it was an interesting thing to ask people to do and compare it to whatever else in their lives they value or don't value.

New confessions for your dashboard, Chris Carrabba returns with "The Shade of Poison Trees", out in stores Oct 2nd.

It's kind of a "surprise attack" by Carrabba and gang, there weren't any news of any new album coming out until last month. It was written in just 10 days and recorded in 3 weeks with producer Don Gilmore, the same guy behind "dusk and summer". (So he's saying he wants to go back to being indie by being sneaky)...love it.

While the album cover looks like a dedication to snow white, it sounds like an acoustic mary poppins soundtrack - a little too cheery for the emo man/band. But the lyrics still remain true to its roots...I suppose.

I'll keep your secrets 'til the grave has swallowed me / And I will never tell a tortured soul there burning by my side / That I am a sinner / I am a savior / I am a lie

And suckers for acoustics, good news, the band's back to their old acoustic ways here. Yeeeehawww. Back to the whiney ways that we loved.
